Global Warming and Kyoto Protocol
One of the aims of the Kyoto Protocol is to lessen carbon emission. Unfortunately, this would be done if we reduce our independence towards oil and fossil fuels and should open ourselves to newly-discovered alternative sources of energy like solar energy, wind energy and alcohol.
We all know how oil is being valued in our world today. Nations become friends and foes because of the conflict on oil territories. The US, for example, is largely dependent on oil-importing nations because of its industries. Our economy largely depends on oil, no matter how we deny it. To produce electricity we need tons of oil to be burned for the plants to operate. Our factories that manufacture food, clothes, accessories and house wares still use oil. Thus the problem in our environment will never be solved at once because of these dilemmas. In such environment with varied ideas, arriving at a consensus will sometimes be achieved after a century when there is nothing left to do and everything is too late.
Recently, the Kyoto Protocol was formed that aims to unite nations all around the globe in their quest in fighting global warming, pollution and other issues in the environment. Since the US is one of the most powerful and influential nations in the world, President Obama should stand firm in the pro-environment side even if it takes major changes in the society. Most americans still love to drive luxury cars which consumes much fuel. One of the aims of the Kyoto Protocol is to lessen carbon emission. Unfortunately, this would be done if we reduce our independence towards oil and fossil fuels and should open ourselves to newly-discovered alternative sources of energy like solar energy, wind energy and alcohol. This will only be achieved if the government has strong support to scientific research. The point is, there have been many tested researches for the environment already. But the government is not still promoting it because, again, it would mean a loss of revenues from large car manufacturers.
The war against the environment is long from over. If it is indeed true that prayers can move mountains, let’s pray that our leaders can move seas and oceans together so that lands and minds can meet in looking for solutions for the environment. We should also do our part in our little ways in conserving energy and saving the environment.
