Government by The People

No democracy in the world is safe in the world today unless there is  education and food for all people. The cornerstones of every democratic nation are human development, and individual freedom. That is why the people across the globe are infuriated with dictatorship, as we recently witnessed violent agitations against the dictatorship in Libya. Harry Belafonte very aptly remarks: “”Anti-democracy is a virus that exists, and pro-democracy is the antibody to that virus, and I think we have to become vigilant, and we have to stay on top of the issues of democracy and freedom.”

The above wise statement by Belafonte is quite justified as we often find that our freedom is in peril, so we should defend it with all our might.

Noam Chomsky aptly throws light on the evils prevailing in the US democracy: “The real world of American society is one which it is very misleading to call simply a democracy. Of course, it is in a sense a democracy, but it is one in which there are enormous inequities in the distribution of power and force. For example, the entire commercial and industrial system is in principle excluded from the democratic process, including everything that goes on within it.”

In India also, the biggest democracy in the world, the democratic form of government, introduced after India became free from the British rule, has not yielded desired results. The Indians have the right to vote. It is very sad that most of the Indians vote on the basis of caste system. A candidate might be fully corrupt and violent, but we prefer to vote for him, if he  belongs to our caste.

Besides, about 50% population here is illiterate,  hence these people  are unable to dicriminate between fair and foul, and vote for a good candidate. But, this should not lead to categorically dismiss the democratic form of government by condemning it as the government of the cattle , for the cattle, and by the cattle. In spite of many evils, Democracy is far superior and better than dictatorial, fascist, auocratic, and totalitarian governments. Democracy is the best form of government, as the supreme power is vested in the people.
