How Can the Libertarian Party Grow?
I have to admit, I’m an outsider when it comes to the Libertarian Party. I’m a liberal. I’m not just a liberal, but a far far left liberal. I love that the libertarians claim to be socially liberal, and would love it if they kicked the Republicans to the curb, but they never will… why?
7. Sex Sells!
Okay, so Republicans control the arguement about abortion, birth control and homosexuality but why can’t Libertarians step up as social liberals they claim to be and encourage open discussion about such topics. You don’t have to be pro abortion, but you are supposed to be pro choice, right? Support choice, support a broader spectrum of sex ed and openess about human sexuality. Knowledge is power and the citizen, the individual should have all the power to decide how they wish to live their lives, right? Follow the lead of Meghan McCain and be Pro Sex!
8. Go Green!
No, I don’t mean about enviromentalism, I mean the Green Party. The Green Party is one of the most liberal in our nation and Libertarians can broaden their appeal to the nation by working with the Green Party on issues such as the decriminalization of marijuana, which both parties agree on, to gain publicity for both parties. The more people you have working together to fight against something, the better, even if you don’t agree with them on everything. The Green Party is about as popular as the Libertarian Party and neither will ever see mainstream success in our nation unless they learn to grow past their hard line positions, this is a step in that direction.
9. Uphold the Constitution.
This is a mantra recieted by nearly all libertarians, and yet they ignore things such as the First Ammendment, which gives us the right to freedom from religion. No persons religion should control another person. Religion should be stripped from our nation. If Libertarians want to grow, they should embrace groups such as Freedomfromreligion.org and other atheist groups which are trying to get God taken out of the pledge of alligence, which was added in the 1950s, and is not as traditional as people want us to believe.
10. Become Mainstream.
I know the whole thing is that you aren’t like anybody else and you are your own person, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be mainstream. What does mainstream mean? It means go on television shows, if you can get on them, and talk about your policies with out coming off as weird. When Ron Paul talked about how the federal government should stop printing money, he was laughed at. This isn’t an insane idea, but it comes off as sounding insane people people don’t understand the logic behind it. It is one step in fixing our economy but it shouldn’t be the sole arguement. Learn to embrace a spectrum of thought and focus on that which appeals to most Americans and you will see a growth in your party.
I love democracy. As a far left liberal I believe people should voice their positions on every issue and that information about every issue should be granted. I know that a far left liberal would can not exist because most people are not as liberal as I am, and I’m okay with that, but I’m out there, all the time, trying to make my world and nation better. We’re currently in an upward growth for liberalism. George Bush pushed our nation too far to the right on social issues and people are fighting back. Climate change is forcing us to embrace enviromentalism and our economic crisis is forcing people to demand for social protection programs. Liberalism is growing and it makes me smile becuase I really believe it is the best, but that doesn’t mean I want to shut you out. Too often we demonize opposing beliefs and call each other names and that has to stop. It’s time we become open and honest.
