I Hate Being Politically Correct

by Tusaani in Politics, January 29, 2009

Why it should not be politically correct to be politically correct.

Ah, the act of being politically correct (PC). It’s sent politicians out of office, people screaming in horror, and even banned a couple of children’s shows. In this day and age, it is basically the law to be politically correct. Without the skill of being PC, you are shunned from society, doomed to be an outcast.

Okay, maybe I’m over-exaggerating just a little bit. However, it can definitely be agreed upon that being PC is something that is seen in everyday media, in school, at work, and in some cases, within your home. So what really drives us to be politically correct? Why be politically correct when you can just be nice instead? It seems as though political correctness is just a way to increase the number of complaints put forth daily.

I for one believe that there is a difference between being PC and nice. Being nice- forgive me for the utter lack of vocabulary here- is something that you do just because you’ve been brought up that way. It is an instinct which is easier for some people and harder for others. Being PC however, is something that you have to drill into your head. It is perhaps something that you feel you must do after being snubbed by someone else.

Now, to some extent, I do agree with what the concept of being politically correct is going for. Don’t make negative comments about someone’s ethnicity, religion, and so forth: a virtue that those who believe in being PC speak for. However, I personally believe that those who think that an innocent “Merry Christmas!” is insulting are just out of their minds! Now, please notice that this statement is not coming from a Christian but rather an atheist. When a Christian takes the time to tell me “Happy Holidays” during the holiday season, I take it gratefully; they are just being friendly.

Another example of political correctness gone totally overboard: apparently stay at home moms are now ‘Domestic Engineers’. Now what on Earth is wrong with a stay at home mom? Until very recently, most moms were indeed ‘domestic engineers’. Why is it suddenly an insult? Is it just not cool enough to be referred to a stay at home mom?

Even children’s tales are not safe from the idiocy that is political correctness. Honley Church of England Junior School in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire decided that to change the main characters from “The Three Little Pigs” to puppies after worries that it would offend Muslim students though absolutely NO Muslims complained about the story. Now, these fairy tales have been around for ages. They are part of the history of British literature and here this school is, throwing that all away in the need to be PC!

Similarly, “Baa baa black sheep” has been banned in several schools because it has the word ‘black’ in it. It’s now “Baa baa rainbow sheep”. Seriously! What are they going to do next? Get rid of the astronomical term ‘Black Hole’?

We’ll keep rolling on this school theme which has gone awry. Blackboards must be called chalk boards and white boards must be called wipe boards. One in ten parents agree that ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ should be retitled ‘Snow White and the Seven Vertically Challenged Men’. At a café, your coffee is no longer black but rather ‘with cream’. I’ve heard about a man who was charged with sexual harassment for calling his female co-workers love at the workplace.

I think that about now, you’ve gotten the point. With the rate that we seem to be moving at, it won’t be too long before those garbage bags which come in a solid colour get bullied into become rainbow coloured. Political correctness is just going totally out of control.

Well put. It is crazy. I could see the point when Political Correctness was first talked about – the fact that some names or words might cause offence, but now it’s got ridiculous.

PC writing is not for me but I never deliberately seek to offend either. Excellent article.

When PC started in the 80’s I never thought it would last this long. Just goes to show you that stupid ideas have just as much fortitude as bad ones.

Great article and I fully agree. Political correctness is just plain stupid. People should just tell it as it is, rather than sugar-coating it.

Every year, there’s a debate on the radio regarding the use of Happy Holidays over Merry Christmas, simply because of people complaining of not celebrating Christmas in their religion. Personally, I think it’s stupid. In my opinion, it’s probably a minority group of about 5 people that have nothing better to do than complain about something nonsensical.

It’s the same thing with competitions these days. Did you know that certain groups of parents want to get rid of trophies for sporting events because they feel their kids feel bad if they don’t win. They argue that everyone should win no matter what. Doesn’t that just eliminate the concept of competition altogether? It’s ludicrous.

Ew. That’s just absurd. Competition is not only fun but it helps progress people further. When there’s competition, you push yourself further and produce better results. Thanks for telling me that: I’ve never gotten that complaint from anyone (with relief).

I guess based on this, you couldn’t even say Snow White either? Snow Honky perhaps – oh no wait – that is worse – ummmm aaaaa Snow Like…? Is using snow as an adjective offensive to Inuit people?

PC is bad for people like me, who often are totally oblivious to what the more recent subtle PCisms are at any particular time.

    Enjoyed the article. Good stuff

I love your article. It’s nice to be witness to a voice of sanity.

Dialga – you’re absolutely right about the “Christmas” thing, because even though those people don’t celebrate “Christmas”, they still take the holidays. Let’s think about that.

Anywho, fantastic article and I hope that all this PC won’t be the end of the world, ’cause you know, soon I’ll just be classified as someone of the translucent colour.

Very good rant, I think some of those are pretty stupid rules too. The one about changing the name of Baa Baa Black Sheep reminds me of the time when it was suggested we should call french fries “freedom fries” because France didn’t agree with us on the war. I’m not gonna call french fries or french toast by any other name. If we disagree with Spain are we going to change the name of a spanish omlet, or spanish rice?

Great article, an eye opener. I’ve been confused about this PC stuff. I thought it was short for Personal Computer. Maybe we should rename Political Correctness and shorten it to BS.
