John a. Macdonald Poem

A poem comprised solely of rhyming couplets, that give details of John A.’s biography- his decisions, his battles, and his victories.

There was a man, that first saw Scotland,

His life hiding for him many a demand.

His name- John A. Macdonald- now unmasked,

And glory and fame will he soon be basked.

The eleventh of January, eighteen-fifteen,

There, the eyes, of Hugh and Helen a gleam.

Did not see Scotland his lifelong abode,

Moved to Canada to make his home.

He decided to take law as his career,

And served in the militia for less than a year.

After his eighteen thirty-seven plight,

He decides politics will instead be his sight.

On his travels, he spots Isabella Clark,

And his heart yearns for her, the light in his dark.

Like mother like son, both very ill,

Their son, Hugh, hadn’t written his will.

Now in Kingston, eighteen forty-four,

Elected MP, to him, nay a chore.

The year is fifty-seven, and his life tragically turn,

His chronically ill wife dies, while he mourns.

But he valiantly and bravely begins again,

Charming Canada West into his hands.

Now, in eighteen fifty-six, he leads,

The Tories, yet with others, are locked in deeds.

The great George Brown suggested the plan,

And the other parties, with it they stand.

Cartier, Macdonald, and Brown,

All ganged up and took Dorion down.

With Dorion out, they tried again,

And Charlottetown was their domain.

Charlottetown was just not enough,

And so, in Quebec, they met, to finish their stuff.

They made 72 resolutions for Britain to see,

And the BNA Act was Britain’s agree.

Canada, a new country, in eighteen sixty-seven,

But only with four, but soon two more eleven.

Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and Brunswick,

The original four, and the rest, time will tick.

Looking to expand to the other sea,

MacDonald buys Rupert’s Land from the HBC.

MacDonald made a new goal to achieve,

Expand Canada “From sea to sea”.

The North-West Territories was the new name,

Of the exchanged lands of the wild, untamed.

But then trouble brewed, out in Red River,

Riel was leading the Métis against the un-giver.

In the finality of the final fight,

The Métis have exemplified their might.

And the 5th to Confederate with the baby,

Manitoba, still “Glorious and Free”.

And alas, the Canadian tempting lure,

Brought BC, seventy-one, to make the land pure.

But Columbia was not easily persuaded,

As they were, oh so far, from Canada’s head.
