Liberals Versus Conservatives

While the light of democracy continues to shine in U. S. politics, conservatives and liberals seem to be constantly opposed to one another, regardless of circumstances, favorable or otherwise.

Generally, those that are liberal in their thinking, and action  believe that people who are too weak to protect themselves should be protected.  Throughout the years, liberals have been vigorously opposed to slavery,  championing reform in essential areas of government, such as the right to vote, public schools, public housing, freedom of religion and other civil liberties.  Historically, their motto is “change,” but not by way of force or revolution. To exemplify liberalism, in the true sense of the word, is to go back a hundred years ago in England. when a political party, called the Liberal Party was established against the Tory (Later called the Conservative Party), for the purpose of championing the cause of those that were under-privileged. For almost fifty years, the Liberal Party in England was represented by politicians, such as William Gladstone who was elected as the first liberal Prime Minister in 1868.  Under the Liberal Party, the English Parliament enacted laws that replaced previous enactments, espoused by Conservatives.

As we all know, there is also a Liberal Party in  U.S. politics, organized in 1944. Since then, the hard-core conservatives have historically opposed ideas advanced by liberals, contending that such ideas might rock the foundation of their belief that direct government involvement in certain areas could undermine the economic and political equilibrium that seem to favor the privileged class.  Having graduated from such a school of taught that deplored governmental interference, as far as certain aspects of politics are concerned, Conservatives seem to have the tendency to oppose any kind of radical change that departs from the norm. This is not to say that liberalism is, in any way, the cure-all for problems that arise, from time to time, nor does conservatism guarantee any  sort of panacea, as far as consistency in government affairs is concerned.

Regardless of who is in charge, no type of government can be totally immune to downturns, from time to time.  The truth is that no nation could be isolated from international developments that could favorably or adversely affect its economy on which its internal politics has absolutely no bearing.
