Liverpool’s Labour Party Scrap Free Fruit for Our Children
As part of a series of budget cuts, the Labour Party in Liverpool have chosen to scrap the scheme which gives our seven to 10 year olds free fruit at school.
Eating fruit at school helps our children’s health and well being, whilst promoting healthy eating.
For a number of years, Liverpool Council run by the Liberal Democrats has ensured many of our children receive fruit every day at school.
In today’s current financial climate it’s very easy to blame the government for everything, especially the cuts that are having to be made. This is what our new Labour council in Liverpool are doing.
However, the Labour Party has a number of choices; they can choose to scrap the free fruit scheme or, alternatively, they can choose to make cuts/savings elsewhere.
They should be looking elsewhere.
Scrapping the free fruit scheme is very short sighted and not in our children’s best interests. Also, it’s one of those ‘front line’ services that, whilst not mandatory, should still be protected.
What really makes my blood boil, is the ‘holier than thou’ stance taken by the current Labour administration. They are absolving themselves from blame wherever possible. Not only are they suggesting that they have no choice but to make these cuts, they have the cheek to suggest that they had no part in the creation of the financial problems.
It was a Labour government that ran our economy down. It was a Labour government that borrowed and spent far beyond our nation’s means.
Now that Labour are no longer in government, they find it far too easy to snipe from the sidelines and attack the cuts that need to be made. They should not forget that it was their Chancellor, Alistair Darling MP, who before the elections said that VAT would have to rise and £44 billion of cuts would have to be made.
The Labour council, on the other hand, are finding it just as easy to blame everything on the coalition government, but enough is enough. It is time that they took responsibility for their actions. They need to take responsibility for their choices.
The Labour Party, in Liverpool, have chosen to scrap the free fruit scheme, just as they have chosen to scrap the free gym and swim leisure passes for under 17s and over 60s. They are also choosing to close nine of the city’s older people’s day centres.
To add insult to injury, the new Labour Leader Councillor Joe Anderson has increased his council pay by 100%, paying himself a tidy £1,000 a week.
I guess it is nice work… if you can get it.
