Lord Young Opens a Can of Worms for David Cameron and Nick Clegg
The Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister have been outed by Lord Young their Enterprise Adviser. Cameron asked him to be honest and that is what he was. Problem was that the honesty went against the Cameron/Clegg mantra that "we are all in this together". Nonsense! The poor are paying for the mistakes of the rich.
The UK is facing the deepest spending cuts in generations. Soon benefit cuts and tax rises will hit us all. Old people, children, students, the unemployed and the disabled; all will see their weekly income cut as the cost of living goes up. The economic strategy will hit everyone.
The Cameron Mantra
“We are all in this together” assures David Cameron but is he playing a blinder?
Today, Lord Young, the government’s Enterprise Adviser resigned. He told the Daily Telegraph that “the vast majority of people in the country today have never had it so good”. His pronouncement was not helpful. David Cameron offered him no support. Instead Cameron told the press that Lord Young was totally embarassed that he had said somehting so stupid and he had withdrawn it.
Lord Young’s Calculation
Lord Young’s calculation was based on the low interest rate which is slashing monthly outgoings for the better off with mortgages. Lord Young was sure that this group of people were not in the same situation as others. Look around, and you will see that there are others not hurting. This is the can of worms that Lord Young’s honesty has opened.
Other Worms in the Can
Bankers are reported to be paying employees bonuses which total £7 billion. Then there’s the super rich. The latter included David Cameron himself. The Prime Minister is a multilillionaire. How can any of these worms be in it with the rest of us?
The Tory Agenda is Live and Well
The softer image of the Tory Party is misleading even if it has served them well. However, as the poor get poorer, as the old freeze to death because they cannot afford heating, as more people become homeless, as children go hungry, the image is about to be shattered. We are not all in it together. Actually the poor are paying for the mistakes of the rich. The same old Tories supported by the New Tories also known as the Liberal Democrats.
