Myths of The Health Care Reform Law/defense of Obamacare

There are a lot of misconceptions of the law that was passed in March 2010. I wanted to clarify a few things to maybe better shape and improve people’s views on it.

Myths of the Health Care Reform Act/Defense of Obama care

Myths:

1.       Myth: Every American will be required to be under government health insurance by 2014.    Fact: There were no government insurance programs created and they are only expecting that 15 million Americans will go on to Medicaid, The health insurance program for the poor. 17 million Americans will go on the private insurance market, probably more as businesses will see dropping their coverage for employees because the government will subsidize them if their employers don’t offer it.

2.       Myth: Every American will be covered by health insurance within 10 years. Fact: only 92 % of Americans will have health insurance. The remaining 8% will not fall under the law because of religious circumstances or extreme poverty (i.e. the homeless). Therefore, the bill that was passed in March will only raise the insured level from 84% to 92%, not to Universal Health Care levels like so many people object to.

3.       Myth: Because of this law, we now have socialized medicine. Fact: the USA does not have anything close to socialized medicine. Socialized medicine would require all medical personnel to be government employees. Socialism is defined as when the government controls the means of production of all goods and services.

4.       Myth: There is a fine that will bankrupt most Americans if they do not by insurance. Fact: The fine for not buying insurance is 695 dollars a year or 2% of your net income on a sliding scale. While the subsidy for people buying insurance given to them from the government ranges from hundreds (for individuals) to thousands for a family of four buying private health insurance.

5.       Myth: Rationing will now occur. Fact: This will not occur. The way the bill was setup was to avoid rationing at all costs. Even though according to experts, more medicine is making us sicker and poorer.

6.       Myth: Death panels. Fact: This was never included in any part of the bill. Seriously, why do people listen to Sarah Palin?

7.       Myth: It’s cheaper for me not to have health insurance.  Fact: Those without health insurance spend on average 6000 dollars a year while those with health insurance pay around 5000 dollars a year while getting more and better care. Therefore, it’s probably a better idea to have insurance than to not have it.
