The outgoing president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, was officially re-elected Sunday, November 6th with 62.6% of the votes in the first round of presidential elections, according to the Supreme Electoral Council (ESC), a victory that his main opponent Fabio Gadea, from right, refuses to acknowledge, citing “fraud”. Mr. Ortega can no longer be joined by Mr. Gadea, who obtained 30.9% of the vote, according to the results for 85.8% of polling stations.

In Parliament, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) also won a comfortable majority which now leaves a free hand to govern. A few minutes earlier, Mr. Gadea had refused to recognize the victory of the incumbent. “We can not accept the results presented by the Supreme Electoral Council because they do not reflect the will of the people,” said the candidate right in front of the press. Sunday’s election was held to “alter the popular will,” assured the contractor Liberal octogenarian, alleging “fraud of unprecedented proportions.”
