Philippines Poll Automation
Why we need it and why we don’t.
The Philippines is currently negotiating with IT firms, the commission on elections has set its goal to automate the 2010 elections. The automation will change the way the Philippines elect politicians.
why the Philippines need it? Simply because Automation:
1. will saved Millions of tax money
2. Results are tallied instantly
3. Remove speculations of cheating
These are just some of the opinions of everyday citizen.
why not? Politicians are doing their best to delay this or simply discard the idea of automation because based on Philippines election history, Delay will give politicians enough time to manipulate the results of the election. Several ways of cheating elections include:
1. Vote buying – a way to influence a voter by means of: giving money, donating goods (a kilo of rice, a couple cans of sardines: just enough goods to feed a person for a day) , promising favors and the likes.
2. Bribing officials – why pay 65 million voters to vote for you when you can make a deal with election officers to do the cheating for you.
The Philippines need change but some individuals fear change.
If we can change back to the way it was before when:
1. DIGNITY is more valued than money
2. Public Trust used to mean anything
3. Public service means serving the country and not personal interest
4. We feed our children with fruits of labor and not spoils of corruption
Change must start somewhere. It starts within the family. When Dad stops bribing traffic enforcers: when moms stops cutting in line at the permits office: when kids stop forging grades…… Help stop the chain….
