The professed September 11th mastermind, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, is going to be released from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to face trial in New York City. It is to be decided if Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is to face the death penalty for having caused the deaths of nearly 3,000 people. In the 9/11 attack ,Mohammed successfully pulled off the deadliest terrorist attack in America. Despite New York cities reputation, death sentences aren’t unprecedented. The jury will be extremely hand picked for this trial. Los Angeles-based jury consultant Philip Anthony said only people who can convince a judge they can set aside their emotions and opinions about Sept. 11 will qualify. Such people will be extremely hard to find in New York. Then there is always the issue of martyr, were the victim actually wants to die for his religion. It is quite possible that this will be enough to sway the judge and juries opinion to avoid the death penalty. So, the decision of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s punishment is all up the New York Supreme court judge, and their hand selected jury.
This will have a tremendous impact upon the United States. Having caused nearly 3,000 deaths, the execution of the mastermind of 9/11 could put millions of peoples hearts at ease. This could help to finally put some closure to the tragedy surrounding loved ones deaths all around America. Not only that, but this trial will also show how effectively or ineffectively that the United States can legally take care of criminals and terrorists alike. As is evident, this trial has much impact upon the United States of America and the many future hearing of terrorists in the future.
