Political Positioning

Before hurling names at me, please note I didn’t say that.
Today I added a new term to my list of synonyms thanks to Obama’s economic advisor.
(And possibly that may be the guy President Obama will appoint as his Secretary of Treasury or Chairman of the Fed, if he gets elected to change the whole world .)
That term is “Political Positioning.”
NAFTA has become a bone of contention between the two Democratic candidates. With US citizens losing jobs to neighbors and foreigners, I should agree something has to be done soon.
Blaming Indians for loss of IT jobs is understandable – but problems set in when politicians and cover-up artists started blaming them for every US job loss including that of the office doorman and that of the salesman at the neighborhood deli.
People now know the root cause lies elsewhere. Since President Clinton was the one who signed NAFTA, it proved a godsend stick for Obama to beat Clinton’s wife with.
Naturally that meant threatening Canadians and Mexicans, the co-signatories to NAFTA, with revision of the treaty. That would have undermined the chances of Canadians and Mexicans getting preferential treatment for US jobs. Mexicans can jump the fence. But Canadians are not good at that. (The only few Canadians who jumped the fence were employed by Bin Laden.)
So Canadians got worried by this Obama rhetoric on NAFTA revision which can be as good as its cancellation.
Obama sent his economic advisor to assuage the hurt feeling of Canadians. During that consolation session the Obama expert comforted the Canadian consul:
It is all just “Political Positioning”. Canadians need not take it seriously. It was meant for domestic consumption by the US voters.(He can tell any lie to his compatriots – otherwise he won’t be a candidate today)!
So “political positioning” on “NAFTA revision” has two meanings:
US meaning: NAFTA will be revised if I am President.
Canadian meaning: NAFTA will not be revised if I am President.
You can take your pick depending on whether you live north or south of Lake Erie!
