Poor Relation Benches
Why are we left out again.
Poor relation benches
I notice that Councillor Irene Dean was awarded by the Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council a Community Chest Grant for £5,087 for seven public benches in Brookmans Park - http://www.welhat.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=3617
Whilst I am delighted for the Councillor and her constituents to have been granted this award, I am also disappointed that no councillor representing Old Hatfield thought to apply on our behalf for Salisbury Square.
We have 5 public benches in Salisbury Square, all in a very sad state of repair, only one still has the back and arms intact, four have no arms, two have no arms or backs and one consists merely of one plank of wood to sit upon.

Having visited Brookmans Park today I noticed that the two benches sited there were in an excellent condition (compared to those in Salisbury Square). They are still complete with back, seat and arms.
I wondered if these are no longer required by Brookmans Park then perhaps they could be passed on to Salisbury Square, and if the others being replaced are in such good condition I am sure that we would be delighted to have those too.
With a lick of varnish these seats still have many years life left in them and would be quite good enough for Hatfield.

Not good enough for Brookmans Park
Liked it

Thanks for bringing the state of the benches in Old Hatfield to our attention. A local resident also did this very recently via a local councillor.
Now that we are aware of the state of the benches, we will be looking to carry out repairs or replacements where necessary.
With regard to the community chest scheme – you’re right in stating that Brookmans Park & Little Heath ward were awarded just over £5,000 to replace and install seven public benches in Brookmans Park, Little Heath and Newgate Street Village in 2010-11. They consulted both with the local Parish Council and a village committee before doing so. It was their major purchase for the year.
Salisbury Square is in the Hatfield East ward. And in 2010-11, the ward councillors decided to spend their allocation on: a contribution towards refurbishment works at the Hatfield Cricket Club pavilion, a projector and related IT for a youth drop-in centre in Hatfield, and the organised fright night activities for young people in Hatfield back in October.
