Presidential Pardons – Not Just For Feathered Turkeys!

Flyer and Fryer were pardoned on the White House lawn, as is traditional for the day before Thanksgiving. This action made me stop and wonder who would else the President would pardon before he leaves office. Here are a few names I’m personally nominating for the dubious honor.

Alberto Gonzales – The last time I checked, an attorney general’s job is to uphold the laws of the country, not help the president to find ways around them, but that is exactly what Gonzales has done. From the Military Commissions Act, to torture memos, Gonzales has advised the President exactly how to side step the laws. The only case in which he acted properly was in with the democratic Rep. William Jefferson, who got caught with $90,000 in cash inside his freezer . When his congressional office was raided, he claimed the raid was legal. I do wonder, however, if the congressional member had been a republican, would he have ordered the raid just the same, or covered it up? Either way, if the raid didn’t “stick”, the AG threatened to quit over the mess .

Michael Hayden – This man must be the second most hated in the government at this time. You may not remember his name, but you definitely know of his work – he’s the one behind the illegal domestic spying as the head of the National Security Agency. He doesn’t think the domestic wiretapping laws apply to his work, so he has collected all your calling records and records all your phone calls. Even staffers feel the NSA under his command has committed illegal acts , which isn’t a good sign, and he’s no fan of the 4 th Amendment of the Constitution by circumventing the laws that protect Americans. This man sees a terrorist behind every tree and under every rock!

Honorable Mentions:

Michael Chertoff – This man may not have broken any laws, but his politics are darned scary, earning him an honorable mention. Recently Chertoff has been trying rile up neo-conservative lawyers to challenge international law, calling it a threat to America . This was never much of a threat until the administration found itself in trouble for modifying the Geneva Convention rules and being looked at for war crimes. It is ironic once Rumsfeld finds himself in trouble, only then does the DHS head feel a need to go on the defensive and rally the legal sector to start forming a protective barrier. Perhaps if they respected the rights of ordinary people, they wouldn’t find themselves with their proverbial tit in the wringer. It takes very little to respect one’s rights, and a lot of effort to trample them.
