Should Freedom be Limited?

Thoughts.

I was asked the other day whether or not freedom should be limited. Being born in America, “the land of the free”, this questioned had me puzzled for longer than i would like to admit. Although it would be invigorating for me to believe freedom shouldn’t be limited, today’s society has changed my perspective. As far as religion and social views, an individual should not have to limit their beliefs or thoughts. Despite what the government, advertising companies, and other social influences try to brainwash into citizens minds, a person’s thoughts will continue as he/she pleases. However, some ideas should be kept as thoughts and not be vocalized. Out of common sense, there a places and times where certain discussions should take place. Is that limiting the freedom to speech? Is asking someone to remain quiet during a film or keep their comments to themselves during a play a restriction to this freedom? Or is it that being honored with the liberty to say what one is thinking assuming that one will have the respect and responsibility to not take advantage of it?

If freedom was not limited, there would be no reason for authority. Without authority would the human race resort to it’s natural instincts? If there was no authority, how would people protect themselves and their families? That is why humans are so willing to restrict their freedoms, to feel protected and safe. But what if authority causes people to act out and commit crimes?
