Should The United States Spread The Idea of Democracy?
Paper I wrote for an American Government class.
Should the United States Spread the Idea of Democracy?
The idea of spreading democracy to other countries is not a new idea. The United States has tried it many times and so far, none of the tries has turned out successful nor will any attempts in the future. The United States should stop trying to spread the idea.
The United States has tried spreading democracy a number of times including Vietnam, Iraq, Pakistan etc. So far most have failed and haven’t even been for the right reasons anyway. Instead of actually spreading democracy for the other countries benefit, the United States has really just attempted the idea so that in return the United States would gain something. A lot of the time, so the United States can have oil benefits. If there were a way to spread democracy without losing American lives, then everyone would be for it. But most the time, for some reason, the United States is willing to give up lives for the “spreading” of democracy, or for benefits.
There is no way that the United States can spread democracy with spending millions of dollars and thousands of American lives. In fact, just in Iraq, there have been over 4,000 deaths and over 31,000 wounded. To help Iraq’s government, there have been nearly 900,000 innocent civilians killed. Also, even with the American economy down, the United States has spent between 600 billion and 900 billion dollars in Iraq. That is equivalent to 200 to 300 million dollars a day. If the world’s economy is slowly going down hill, then why should the United States spend that kind of money to “help” another country?
People in the United States should not be against war, but need to realize that there is a price to pay when trying to help with another country’s government. A lot of the time, the people from the other country aren’t willing to change their belief in order to change anyway. If the United States really wanted to spread democracy, then democracy should be spread for the right reason, not just for the United States’ own benefit.

Can you please email your paper that you wrote so I can study this topic more in depth about why we shouldn’t spread democracy to other countries.
