Stem Cells, Obama, Abortion: Oh My!
Scientists in Shanghai, China, have successfully used the stem cells of a pig to create organ tissue. This has implications not only ethically but brings the political debate in America back to the front burner. Abortion and its role in politics are to be questioned.
When President Obama signed the bill which allowed and promoted stem cell research, it overturned the anti-science philosophy of the Bush Administration… Or so it seemed. In reality, despite your political affiliations and feelings on abortion, G.W. allowed for stem cell research as well with one large proviso. It prevented the use of embryonic stem cells in scientific research.
So how does that translate into political terms? Extremists on both sides translate it as President Obama is for abortion. They are completely wrong. He has publicly stated he does not approve of abortion as a means of birth control. But there are times when those of us with level heads could prevail; for example in cases of rape, incest and still childbirth.
While this does not condemn G.W, it still hails President Obama as the progressive one of the two and for that, he should be applauded regardless of party affiliation. The Chinese pig further proves that stem cell research can be done on non-embryonic cells but then again, it’s China. They haven’t been forbidden to use those cells for eight years, in fact the government has been treating as their own Man on the Moon Project.
This leaves the United States of America behind another superpower merely for religious reasons entering the white house. Not many good things happened during the Middle Ages concerning fairness and equality, but there was a separation of church and state. There should never have been an argument about this as it should not only have never entered the political circle, it should have never been argued. We as Americans need to think about each other and stop using a 1500 year old text as our definitive guidebook to science and technology.
