The Democratic Freedom Caucus

The Democratic Freedom Caucus, (DFC), is a caucus within the United States Democratic Party. The DFC’s platform is based upon the principles of economic liberty, personal liberty, limited government, and social responsibility.

Organizational Structure

The current National Director of the Democratic Freedom Caucus is Brooks Nelson. The National Committee currently has twelve members, 15 state chairs, (including Missouri and Maryland), and eight regional representatives.

History

The Democratic Freedom Caucus was foundedin 1996 by Hanno Beck, Mike O’Mara, and ex-Libertarian Party member Andrew Spark.

On October 16, 2000, the DFC started an online discussion group, which currently has over 330 members. Later on, individual state chapters started their own online discussion groups, like Missouri, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

DFC Missouri state chair, Mike Bozarth, was elected to the St. Joseph  City Council in 2006 for a four-year term.

In 2006, the DFC endorsed Frank Gonzalesto represent Florida’s 21st district in Congress. Gonzales later lost to long-time Republican incumbent Lincoln Diaz-Balart, but still managed to get 40.5% of the vote.

The Democratic Freedom Caucus endorsed Bill Richardson for President during the 2008 Democratic primaries. On November 19, 2008, the DFC endorsed Richardson for Secretary of State in the Obama administration. The DFC offered their congratulations on December 9, 2008 to Richardson when he was nominated as Secretary of Commerce instead, only to offer their regrets a month later when he withdrew his name for consideration.

In July 2008, the DFC endorsed  Hazel Park, MI councilman, Andy LeCureaux for state representative in Michigan, District 27, but he later lost the primary to Ellen Lipton.

On February 21, 2009, DFC National Director Brooks Nelson spoke on a panel at the Second Annual International Students For Liberty Conference at George Washington University. Nelson later reported that the panel he was on “went very well” and that he had “good conversations” with others there after the panel was over.
