The “Maha Kumbh” of Elections

ABout the Indian general elections 2009…

Another thing that got limelight in these elections is the hate-speeches. Varun started it. No, let me correct myself. He got noticed of it. You go to Rampur in Uttar Pradesh or to Varanasi, on a local scale, both Muslim and Hindu leaders openly use these speeches to polarize the constituency. In fact, hate speeches have been an integral part of election campaigning in regions where the minorities are a significant number. Politicians just strike a match to inflame the volatile religious sentiments. Then Sanjay Dutt complains of his bashing up in jail after he was accused under TADA for the 1993 Bombay blasts. He speaks of many things so as to make the Muslim community believe that the country’s police are biased towards them who also don’t spare those who are half- Muslims as he himself is. This is exactly what a subtle hate-speech is- the purpose is achieved without using blunt statements.

Then, the aggregation of regional parties having different ideologies and multi-directional approach for nation building (if one thinks of pushing the nation forward, the other pulls and the net result of the push and pull is zero!), forming the Third Front. Chimp again points out that this Third Front in the evening of May 16 will act as a buffet for the Congress and BJP to choose from!

Of late, one thing that has been a cut above from the rest is indeed the SHOE-GATE!!!! P. Chidambaram dodged it. Naveen Jindal luckily escaped from it. And as it always happens, publicity stunts made some to throw the shoe on Manmohan Singh and L. K. Advani. But the shoe fell miles away from where they were, and they hardly noticed!

In the end, I pray that it’s not a hung parliament this time as we traverse through tough times. For it might have serious consequences, for only ourselves to suffer…
