The New Civil War
With growing government intrusion, our nation has become polarized like never before.
Eleven score and thirteen years ago our forefathers brought forth upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now ,in the twenty-first century, we are once again engaged in a great civil war. But this war is not being fought with cannons and guns, rather ideas and insults. The north and the south have long since made peace but battles are still being waged. Battles of left vs. right, big government vs. small government, and freedom vs. subservience.
During his campaign president, Barack Obama promised the American people change and change is exactly what he brought. He changed a country divided by war to a country divided by the size and scope of government. Obama increased an already large government ten fold and continues to inflate it. Some say that the private sector is so corrupt and so greedy that the federal government must seize the reins and control an uncontrollable downward spiral. But my question is, why? When has the government ever proved itself worthy to control anything other than the back room deals and the shady goings on of Washington.
Our country’s Post Office is billions of dollars in debt, our cities public schools are getting worse with each passing year, and we have to stand in line for four hours just to renew our drivers license. In fact, the only time government has ever pleased us is when it has stayed out of our way. This became apparent during the 1990’s when Bill Clinton was in office. You can argue whether or not he was a great president or a horrible one, but what you can’t argue is that he was too busy with his infidelities to butt into our business and because of that, things ran relatively smoothly.
9/11 did however change our country dramatically and under the guise of “safety” George Bush increased his federal powers and the spending habits of the government. And despite what people think, not every conservative thinking person was for George Bush. So once again, under the guise of “safety”, President Obama has increased the size of government. With multiple (about 37) czars, a now government controlled car industry, and spending control over our nations largest banks, Obama has turned our financial industry into politics as usual. And despite all of this, along with his recent grab to control healthcare, he wonders why people are beginning to turn against him.
For over two centuries our nation has been accustomed, more or less, to governing ourselves. That was the reason we rebelled against the British Empire and the reason we still protest our grievances in the streets. We are a nation that was born with a innate distrust of government and an equally innate love for freedom, and not surprisingly, when either of the two is even perceived to be threatened we push back.
I agree that times need to change, but that change does not warrant intrusion by the federal government. Obama’s ideology leads him to believe that government is the ONLY answer, but now many Americans are starting to show their dismay with that theory. His poll numbers are starting to drop and many Americans are again taking to the streets in protest. Obama’s only response to this is to insult and marginalize these protests, which means only one thing, they are starting to work. Our nation is polarized and is now in what I call a “cold-civil war.” Only by every American standing up and screaming at the top of their lungs to let our government know, whether it be Republic or Democrat, that it cannot intrude on our everyday lives, it cannot squelch our freedom, or the or our spirit that gives it life.
