The Reason Why Increasing Campaign Spending by Politicians is Good
Why it is a good thing that politicians are always spending more and more on their campaigns.
At first glance, an astronomical increase in campaign spending may seem to undermine the basic principles of a democracy. Those who have the most money to spend campaigning, advertising, and promoting themselves primarily win elections. This makes the “political playing field” uneven and puts candidates with less campaign money at a disadvantage. However, candidates have to fundraise and get financial support from various people, organizations, and corporations. Candidates who can raise the most money for their campaigns obviously have a lot of support from many important and influential “movers and shakers” of the United States. In this sense, campaign spending directly reflects a candidate’s support and backing. Increased campaign spending is good for democracy because it allows the most viable candidates to spread their messages and stand out among the rest of the candidates.
Increased campaign spending weeds out candidates that cannot get enough financial support early on before the actual election nears, allowing only a few candidates to stay in the political lime light. These candidates then campaign against each other, battling for the public’s vote. Due to increased campaign spending, weak candidates are essentially eliminated from the political race, while those with a strong financial backing remain at the forefront of the election and in the public eye.
