The Time Has Come to Discuss The Two Party System

Reactions to the New Jersey’s Gubentorial Election said that the major parties did not provide good canidates. This old saying, "Hold my nose and pull the lever and vote," echoed wide after the Election.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domecanstic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Some friends express displeasure with both major parties’ choices for New Jersey Governor. One of my friends asked me the following question. “If Obama has an approval rating 80% in New Jersey than why is Corzine’s rating so low?”  Another friend said that he would not vote because of his dislike for either candidate.   Well if you don’t like either candidate then how about the third party candidate Dagget?  Of course, I never asked that question, but I should have.

If you don’t like neither the Democrat nor the Republican Candidate then not why look at the third party candidate?  And if you hold both parties responsible for the decline, then logically the third party candidate should have gotten your vote. So then, the Independant Candidate Dagget should have done better in the election.  Dagget received only received 5.8% of the votes while Christie and Corzine split the remaining votes(3.6% difference.)

What happen to Dagget?  Why did Christie and Corzine receive a 93.4% of the vote? Fear played a big part in the end of the election.  Partisans from each party feared their party’s  oppanant would win.  

People feared that if they voted for Dagget than Corzine would win.   Remember that pre-election  polls showed a tight race between Christie and Corzine with about a six percent undecided vote.  So, a vote Dagget could effect the outcome of this race.

I cannot accuse the Corzine haters because this same fear occurred 2000 and 2004 when Ralph Nader entered the Presidential Race.  He may have convinced himself and his supporters they would change the system,  but he could not sway those who did not want Bush. In the minds of those not in favor of Bush, they perceived him a threat to Gore or Kerry because he would take away votes.   I do remember though some people created ways that they would try to help Nader well still not hurting Gore or Kerry.  They said that if you lived in a safe Blue state you would vote for Nader while in  Red state you stayed away form him.
