The Word “Honesty” Scares People
A commentary on politicians promises on social programs and our reaction to these promises.
Here is a frightening word, honesty. It is scary because all of us have compromised our principals. We told our selves we would wait to be married. We dreamed about marriage, but we live with a person, instead. Therefore, our ideas on careers, education, marriage, parenting, and other critical issues have fallen to the wayside.
This is important because the major issue that stands out in these political times for me is honesty. Today, I was thinking about the differences between McCain and Obama. I was even considering writing in support of McCain until I reminded myself that I see McCain as a political opportunist. Even though Mr. McCain is a 100% better candidate than Obama, I still cannot lend him my support because then I would be as dishonest as Mr. McCain.
Now, I know McCain is better to deal with the issues confronting America today. McCain sees the threat of terrorism as real and not a figment of conservatives’ imagination. Furthermore, though some think this will be an election based on economic issues I know they are wrong and many still have security on their mind. Terrorist will be around for a long time.
On this issue Mr. Obama is choosing to straddle the fence. First, he was against the war in Iraq. He spoke against it at its start and when he got to the US senate, he voted against the surge. Now, Mr. Obama is trying to give the impression he would practiced making decisions based on a deep understanding of the challenge and not his knee-jerk reactionary policy against military force.
This to me this is dishonest. For one, Mr. Obama fails to recognize the serious threat terrorism poses to America. Second, Mr. Obama thinks rational and sophisticated conversation works with irrational and violent people. In addition, it is my opinion that Mr. Obama’s opinions on terrorism are political opinions. To me political opinions are opinions a person holds just because he or she thinks these opinions will gain him or her votes. Again, this is dishonest.
The news of the day appears to be Rev. Jesse Jackson attacking Obama for Mr. Obama’s statements about afro-American men running from their responsibilities. Any one who chooses to be dependent on the government instead of working to provide for him or her self is running from their responsibilities.
Therefore, what is the purpose of Obama lecturing the afro-American men in a church? I think it has to do with all the BLOGGERS such as my self who have being constantly writing about personal responsibility. A news anchor talking about personal responsibility can sound preachy. However, when a regular person talks about it, the issue carries more weight.
