Who Is Threatening Who?
Repeatedly the media has been feeding us a steady diet of, “Iran is threatening the whole world!” stories, but is actually true? A story was completely squashed here in America about Ahmadinejad complaining to the United Nations he was being threatened. So who’s actually threatening who?
The Israeli politicians are in town meeting with President Bush and making wild speeches to American Jews in an attempt to get the United States to go to war with Iran . Something fascinating has developed and no one seems to have carried it, much less noticed it.
By now everyone has heard the comments by Benjamin Netanyahu made, which are quite off the chart:
This won’t be the last Israeli politician who will make comparisons. Ehud Olmert has been making fast and loose comparisons and veiled threats as well. Tzipi Livni’s job has been to get the world to come together and go after Iran .
Most Americans do not know there are American warships off the Iranian coastline in the Persian Gulf , performing “war games”. Iran called this action “ adventurous”, but they didn’t take the bait and strike out, as I suspect Bush was hoping to provoke him (like Lyndon Johnson did at the Gulf of Tonkin , which pushed the United States into Vietnam). If the war games didn’t unsettle Ahmadinejad, then a post-election build up of more warships in the area is admittedly intended to intimidate Iran into giving up its nuclear ambitions.
I’m also keeping in mind the IAEA has found something that is of potential concern in terms of the Iranian nuclear program, however, it’s too early to say what it is. Back in September they debunked the White House’s direct assertion Iran had nuclear weapons. Not cooperating does not automatically mean you’re guilty, and considering there has been almost no contact between either nation for almost thirty years, Iran is under no obligation to give up information to the United States . They should, however, comply with the IAEA monitors, but suspicion of westerners runs off the charts in the Middle East , and with good reason.
At this stage, Israel and the United States has been all over Iran over a potential threat, which is exactly what happened to them with their assertions on Iraq , according to the Charles Duelfer report . Generally speaking, Iran could be a legitimate threat – if the US intelligence agencies actually knew something about Iran ; they have admitted they know diddly squat .
Then the almost buried story that makes this all worthwhile surfaces:
The threats were ‘matters of extreme gravity’ and the United Nations Security Council should condemn them and demand that Israel "cease and desist immediately from the threat of the use of force against members of the United Nations," Iranian UN Ambassador Javad Zarif said.
I hate to say it, but for once Iran is correct. How ironic is it for Israel and the United States to threaten Iran when they don’t have the intelligence (and the credibility) to factually back up their statements? After Collin Powell’s speech at the United Nations, showing us satellite pictures of threats and describing mobile factories, it is hard for anyone to believe what the intelligence agencies might produce as proof.
