Why You’re Wrong

I examine three very common arguments against Anarchy and then I argue them right back in your face. Thanks but try again, guys.

What’s going to happen if there’s no police to enforce The Law(tm)? Well first of all if you steal and don’t try to make amends then suddenly you’re excluded from society. No one wants to deal with a person like that so the baker wont give you any bread, the tailor wont give you new clothes, the builder wont fix your leaking roof and no one is going to help you when the guy you stole from comes looking for revenge. I know it sounds savage and… Well yeah, it sounds savage.

Humans are not, as some like to believe, all good and kind at their core. Oh sure it’s in everyone somewhere but it’s not the foundation of humanity. The exact same can be said for the idea of “evil” (if you really want to use the word) and cruel. At their most basic a human is an animal trying to survive and we do that in a socially focused way. If you have all of society against you then you don’t survive. But this has gone on too long. Next point!

“People need leaders. People want leaders. That’s just human nature and history proves it!”

Do you know what history proves? History proves there’s always some ass-hole who wants to be your ruler. Take a look at the violent political troubles in the Western Sahara for me, would you? Are they having trouble because they’re in desperate need of a leader? Nope. They’re in trouble because there’s two factions wanting to be king of the castle and they’ve been fighting bloody wars over it. That’s how rulers always come about and this idea of “democracy” is a modern lie being told to make it seem like you’ve really got a choice and remind you how much you want a leader. But I’ve already said that in another article.

People aren’t naturally in desire of a ruler or a leader. I am proof of that and so is every other anarchist in the world. If leadership was natural then no one would have a problem with it. Do you ever hear someone protesting breathing? That’s natural. These ideas of government and handing them your life is all social.

“There’s even leaders in nature. Wolves have an alpha wolf, elephants have a matriarch, lions prides all fall under one leader too. There’s always some kind of social hierarchy.”

I kind of thought this argument was a joke at first. Actually, that’s not true. The first person I heard this from was someone very smart who had definitely earned my respect. That didn’t make it any less of a silly argument though.

If we’re following “nature’s example” then I guess we should just have one leader who is bigger and stronger than everyone else? That’s how it normally works in nature. Or did you just forget about the tigers? They don’t have any social hierarchy at all. In fact even the males aren’t really dominant in any way. Or how about birds? Admittedly this isn’t the best example because flocks of birds do sometimes have a social hierarchy but it’s not so much a governmental pyramid so much as it is school-yard bickering with the bigger birds just being mean because they can, I suppose. They don’t have one or even many leaders deciding when it’s time for them to work or what the other birds can and can’t do. Actually bird flocks almost work on that mutual aid idea I was talking about.

The point is, though, that nature doesn’t have one code of social structure by any means. Even the food chain doesn’t work that way. The Siberian Tiger is able to kill brown and black bears for food if it needs to and both those animals are larger than it. So even in this idea of carnivores eating the smaller herbivores doesn’t work because they don’t always restrict themselves to one Order or to one size group. Nature is pretty chaotic… Or maybe it’s anarchistic? The point is that nature does not give us any example and if that’s not enough let me just remind me that: Humans are animals, yes, but we are not wolves, elephants, lions, birds, tigers, bears, or even chimpanzees. We are our own species with a long list of achievements and behaviours that separate us from the wilder animals.

Alright this article is getting a little longer than I was expecting so I’ll put a halt to it. Coming up next may be more of this or possibly something more emotive and inspiring. Or maybe velociraptors because that’s always fun. Remember that if you dig me then give me a quick hello in the comments.

For more anarchist rhetoric or just velociraptors you can read my other articles here.
