Wrestling is Politics Without The Pretense
Professional wrestling has long been a source of enjoyment for me, and now I realize why. For years, it has brought me skewed looks and downright embarrassment from others. It has been especially so when friends and associates from the political world learn of my “obsession.” Yet it is only recently that I came to understand why I enjoy it so.
Wrestling is politics without the pretense. Yes, wrestling is orchestrated and is all really just a “big show.” Yet no one claims any differently, and therein lies the truth that separates it from politics.
Politics, too, is orchestrated, with town hall meetings, tea bags, and endless meaningless words from elected officials all in the mix. So much so that we do not know any longer who or what to believe. Whereas grass roots movements were once simply that, now they are big business and need to be traced back to their funding levels, where they generally lose credibility, whether liberal or conservative.
Wrestling has no such problem, and in that sense, it becomes much purer than politics will ever be. The character who is a hero this week may become a “heel” within the next few, but no one really seems to care among wrestling fans. It’s all for show, and everyone knows it. If only politics would make the same credible admission, we could get on with the business of trying to improve the country.
