Taking an IQ test can be a great idea. The results of a legitimate IQ test can boost your self-confidence, although they can also deflate your ego.
You can take your IQ test at your psychologist’s office or even online. The online IQ tests have been quite popular past few years, especially the free ones. However, this is the area of the web that you should not take too seriously. Many of the free IQ tests found on the internet can tell you your approximate IQ. But only few of them are prepared by professionals, they are rarely thorough enough and professionals do not take a look at your answers before you get your results.
So, the answer to our basic question is “No, free online IQ tests are not accurate”. That does not mean they are pointless though. Despite the fact that free IQ tests found on the internet will not tell you the exact IQ you have, taking them will tell you at least approximately how intelligent you are. They often test several aspects of one’s intelligence such as logic, perception, memory, etc. Such IQ tests will help you identify your weaknesses and strengths. Then you can focus on improving in those areas where you are lacking.
Online IQ tests also serve as a great exercise for your mind. Solving different kinds of problems is one of the ways to keep your brain working properly. Of course, proper nutrition, sleep and overall body fitness is advised too.
My experience with free online IQ tests
Of course, there is an experience gained by completing tents of free online IQ tests backing up my claim of their inaccuracy. I took tens of IQ tests online past few days including the BBC’s test the nation IQ test. I scored differently in each and every test. Actually, my supposed IQ has never hit the same number twice. I scored anywhere from mentally retarded (about 70) to genius (about 160). However, most of the results pointed towards an average IQ between 100 and 120. Although, all tests I took were in English which is not my first language and my vocabulary was insufficient for some of the analogy, correct statement and best fitting words types of questions.
By the way, according to BBC’s IQ test, I am retarded. Of course, I tell this to you as a joke. Their test appears to be thorough enough. However, there is very little time to read the instructions, questions and options provided. In part with blended faces, there are questions where you cannot give the right answer unless you know how those celebrities look like as pictures provided are sometimes way too small to help you. Not to speak that many non-British ‘test subjects’ like me will have a problem with choosing correct words at times. That being said, BBC’s test the nation IQ test is designed for British people primarily. Some other free online IQ tests are prepared in similar way. So, you should not take them too seriously.
To conclude, free online IQ tests are not very accurate. Taking several different IQ tests will tell you whether your IQ is below average, average or above average though. Of course, your results in free online IQ tests will often depend on knowledge of the language they are written in. The general tests where language is not of issue are usually very narrowly oriented thus very inaccurate in telling your overall intelligence. So, my advice is to take mostly tests in your first language and take as many as you can – not in a row though, tired mind always performs poorly. Gather results over several days before making any conclusions and please keep in mind that pretty much none of us are geniuses and above average IQ is rather rare too. Then there is all the discussion and criticism of this type of measuring intelligence. There is no reason for feeling depressed if your average score in free online IQ tests or even more professional IQ tests is lower than expected. You can always try to improve.
