Are You a Perfectionist?

by LeiraOlecra in Psychology, March 25, 2008

If you get that annoying little twitch when something’s not exactly right, you may be a perfectionist.

Dr. Salvatore V. Didato, a New York City psychologist formulated a quiz to test and see if a person is a perfectionist.

On a scale of 1 to 3, with 1 means disagreement, 2 agreements, and 3 strong agreements, rate the following eight statements:

  1. I feel a letdown after finishing a challenging job
  2. I still could not allow errors to remain in my work even if I know that I could get away with it
  3. Whenever I do only an average job I feel dissatisfied
  4. Even to relatives and close friends I don’t’ feel comfortable revealing my shortcomings
  5. I always catch myself critically sizing up strangers’ clothing, manner, grooming, etc when I am on a public transportation
  6. I was never really content with my grades as a student
  7. If my work area is not neat I do not function well
  8. Whenever I see a tilted picture hanging on the wall, I always feel the urge to straighten it

Explanation:

By setting their level of aspirations unrealistically high, perfectionists in the process often come out losers. It is regarded as asset when perfectionism works in the service of mankind.

Score:

By adding the numbers you assigned your answers, tally your score. Clinical experience shows that most people should scores between 13 and 19. If your score is less than 12, definitely you are a non-perfectionist. But the closer you’re score to 24, the more perfectionists you are.

Here are the reasons why each of the quizzes above indicates a degree of perfectionism.

  1. After they have accomplished a tough job, perfectionist often experiences a flat downcast feeling
  2. In things they do, they have a strong sense of conscience to allow flaws
  3. If their performance is not above average they feel uncomfortable
  4. It is too much of a blow to reveal to somebody about their shortcomings
  5. From a critical point of view, they tend to evaluate others and themselves too
  6. While they were at school they often feel unsatisfied with their performance level
  7. & 8. They usually feel the need to be well-organized, neat and precise.
