Are you supertitious?
You think you are not superstitious if you don’t believe that a cat crossing your path is inauspicious?
What do you mean by superstition?
let’s have a look at the dictionary meaning below;
1. a belief or notion, not based on reason or knowledge, in or of the ominous significance of a particular thing, circumstance, occurrence, proceeding, or the like.
2. a system or collection of such beliefs.
3. a custom or act based on such a belief.
4. irrational fear of what is unknown or mysterious, esp. in connection with religion.
5. any blindly accepted belief or notion.
But why am I talking about superstition?
Lets have look at meaning no.4 “irrational fear of what is unknown or mysterious, esp. in connection with religion” it says exp. in connection with religion which has now become the most popular meaning.
Did you know even Socrates had believed in a superstition, it was that women had less number of teeth compared to men!
Don’t we stereotypical opinions that a person wearing glasses is well read and intelligent?
Even in the famous book “Body Language” by Allan Pease there is a picture of sexually aggressive female with skimpy clothes, cigarette in a hand and standing suggestively. True body language determines a lot about a person, but this picture clearly was a stereotyped presentation.
A thousand page book can be written easily on this subject. Probably a person who has toured the world can come up with more content.
And it has also turned out that many so called superstitions were actually meaninful customs or beliefs, only they did not have the right explanations.
For example a person who belives in astrology is considered superstitious. A person who changes his name in accordance with numerology is labelled superstitious. Then are all astrologers and numerologists fraudsters? Astrology and numerology are real sciences. But too much importance need not be given to these sciences compared to one’s own abilities.
Each and every person is superstitious in some way or the other. Instropection will tell the area of our superstition.
