Avoid Barriers While Managing Conflicts

Bridging leads to a win-win situation whereas barrier ends with nothing and further continuation of conflict.

Conflict is a dynamic affair. Conflict will continue or will go to an end will depend on the style, response and behavior of the people within that. If you behave defend or attack or retreat or appease, basing on your behavior the other will respond.

So you should assess first what type of personality you are; bridging or putting barrier. At the same time you should know about the other person’s style and habit also. Bridging leads to a win-win situation whereas barrier ends with nothing and further continuation of conflict.

Perfect win-win situation

A barrier type person will have the following type of mindset. If you ever come across a person with these type of attitudes, simply avoid them and never try to do any business deal with them.

  • I am right.

  • You should change.

  • You are the problem.

  • I want power over you.

  • I don’t bother…

  • I want to prove you wrong.

  • I am indispensable in your needs.

  • Look at my needs, those are important.

  • You should change your view.

There are many words also displays barrier type personality.  Few examples are given below:

  • Me.

  • You should..

  • Waste to time.

  • That will not work.

  • That’s a final order.

  • You will not understand.

  • I know all these.

  • Out of question.

A barrier type attitude is also expressed through nonverbal signals. Some nonverbal gestures of this barrier type personalities are

  • Frowning.

  • Lip biting.

  • Raised voice.

  • Crossed arms.

  • Sharp gestures.

  • Hands in pockets.

  • Hands over mouth.

  • Avoiding eye contact.

  • Narrowing the eyes.

All conflicts require at least two persons. If you want a win-win situation at the end, never practice any of the above mentioned things. Even if you find your counter part is of barrier type, reframe your style to counter him. If that is not possible on your part, avoid him to avoid conflict.
