Becoming a Psychologist

What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist? Very little.

People get confused between Psychologists and Psychiatrists. It is understandable, as they both deal with matters of the mind. But only one can prescribe medication.

In a way, everyone is a psychologist of some sort. Everyone seems to have developed an interest in other peoples behaviour as well as their own. A relatively new publication ‘Psychologies‘ is proof enough of the major interest in the subject, as well as reality TV shows such as ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here’. However, Psychology is a science, and when we are watching the reality TV programmes for instance, our reaction is based on our personal opinions. A Psychologist has to be careful to not let personal opinion bias the scientific investigation.

Amateur Psychologists make crucial mistakes. These mistakes include:

  1. Self-fulfilling Prophecy- This is believing that everyone else thinks and acts the same as yourself. They don’t.
  2. Linking Traits- This is thinking that, just because that you have seen one trait in a person, they will automatically display a range of other traits. For example, seeing someone who is kind, you may believe that they will also be warm-hearted and helpful. This may not be the case.
  3. Halo Effect- This is applying only favourable characteristics to people you like.
  4. Theories of Mind- Also known as stereotyping. Seeing someone sleeping on the streets does not mean that they are junkies, alcoholics, involved in petty crime, have broken relationships or are not very bright.

To be a Psychologist, you have to be prepared to put your own opinions to the side, to let the scientific fact seep through.
If you were wondering which of the two professions could prescribe medication, I will put you out of your misery. Only Psychiatrists can prescribe medication.

Well, they must be good in some way else they would be extinct. However, I do not have a definite answer to your burning question.
