Compulsive Hoarding of Stuff
Hoarding many different things by many people in this country has gotten to be outrageous if not downright contagious. The more we have, the more we want, the more we get and we still want to out do the Jones. When is the last time you threw out or sold your unneeded and unused things?
Many Americans endanger themselves by cramming and hoarding more things into homes that cannot accommodate and were not built for holding vast number of different things. In such overstuffed homes the invitation and the breeding of germs and diseases are likely to take place. As a result we see the effect it takes on the inhabitants of these homes. The over accumulation of “stuff” by people whose children have left and started their own families must take a toll on the mothers, especially single females whose husbands are deceased or they are divorced, are growing in numbers everyday. The question is why? What is the force or motives behind such behavior? Hoarding many things that one does not use or need, must stem from some mental disorder it would seem. This is behavior out of the ordinary and it is a pattern of behavior which a person does compulsively—in other words, not because they want to behave that way, but because they feel they have to do so. This is what The Merriam Webster dictionary has to say about human compulsive hoarding. “While humans are not notable for hoarding behavior, it is a common response to fear, whether fear of imminent society-wide danger or simple fear of a shortage of some good. When trouble looms (such as civil unrest or natural disaster), people’s first instinct is to collect foodstuffs, water, gasoline, and other essentials.”
Is this what the compulsive hoarding of “stuff” all about? We live in a land of plenty and with our political parties using scare tactics, can that be a contributing factor causing the increase in compulsive hoarding of “stuff?” Can that kind of behavior be driven by the insane political scare rhetoric and ads that are in widespread use on the TV and on “Talk radio?” If so we are in deep trouble because hoarding in this country has risen to a new level. The TV networks use and show people “compulsively hoarding of stuff” and it is ridiculous to see people living that way.
I wonder what you think or am I being over sensitive about compulsive hoarding of “stuff”?

I hoard information in the form of books, old magazines, handwritten notes, scraps of paper, anything like that. Scared to throw any of it out in case I need to find it our again, as I’ve such a bad memory.

hoarding is like gaining the whole world and losing one’s only soul.

If you are not an owner, be a boarder, not a hoarder!
