Creative Dreaming

Dreams play a large role in creativeness and throughout history not only have literary figures been inspired by dreams but painters, musicians, scientists, architects and even inventors have become inspired by thier dreams to go on and do something great from this inspiration.

Has anyone ever had a dream that was so vivid it seemed real and upon waking from this dream you obtained some kind of insight or inspiration? Personally, I for one have on many occasions. In fact I wrote a whole manuscript based on a dream or rather a series of dreams, 300 pages! I remember in the first dream, the one of the most importance, I was sitting on grassy slope directly under a tree. It was a wooded area but the type of place that would make a lovely spot for a picnic. A being of light made his way to me and stood over me and said “You are a writer, you always have been and you always will be!” I did not say anything in the dream as I felt it was in my best interests to listen rather then be heard. He then pointed to my hands and instantly a pen and paper appeared and he said, “Write this!”

Suddenly I was somewhere else. I had no involvement in this dream whatsoever and it was as though I was simply a bystander, standing on the sidelines watching as the dream played out. The dream was very intense, there was a war raging on around me but not between humans, it was a war between angels and demons. I will give no further information about the dream as it would ruin the basis of my book but when I awoke from it the first thing I did was get a pen and paper. Roughly 2 hours later I popped my head back up into reality and sitting before me was the first 20 pages of my book .Over the next two years I had dreams all related to main one and ended up with a manuscript.

In light of this I began to do research as to this phenomena because I had heard before that some writers actually get a lot of their ideas from dreams, which is called creative dreaming but what I was wrong about is throughout history not only literary figures have been inspired by dreams but painters, musicians, scientists, architects and even inventors have become inspired by thier dreams.

Fascinating and thought provoking article. My dreams have never led to anything worthwhile. Here’s hoping your manuscript sees the light of day. Can’t wait to read the book and see what those dreams were all about.

Tanya, this is a very in-depth and thought-provoking piece. I have often had dreams that stay with me long after I’ve awoken. I always write my dreams down if they’re compelling enough in some way. In some cases my dreams have lead to short stories. Great write!

I love your dream article. Very good examples of well known writers that have been there and done that. Including creativity
from your own dreams. I don’t remember being blessed so richly.

Jie Zhang’s Continual Activation Theory of Dreaming says that when we dream, we transfer memories from short-term to long-term memory. Consolidating long-term memories can help with the creative process.

Ooooo I loved this! I believe in our dreams come our real inner selves! undressed and laid bare. Loved the the bits about some of the most famous creations coming from dreams…maybe we should all take note and remember our dreams, funnily enough I am waiting for a write to be published about some of my crazy dreams this week, after being on a very high dose of steroids the dreams were very weird.

    My you are no dreamer
    All my poems are
    A consequence of dreams
    It’s only that I can’t get up
    For fear of waking others
Yet in the morning I write poetry
    As it comes to me
    So I have composed over
    1700 poems or so
    I now suppose

    Dreams are the inspiration
    Of the days’ happenings
    Whatever one writes
    Comes from within
Some like it, some may not,
But all don’t believe in even God,
    So who am I?

    If my work is appreciated
    I shall dream more
    If you don’t credit me,
    I shall still continue
    To dream for sure,
Whether you like it or not
    I will compose
    Poems all the more

Most times I can’t remember my dreams. I’ve had a few like you describe, but not often. One stuck with me so much that I’ve written a book based off of it.
    Nice piece.

Facinating article mystify. Some of my dreams have come true over the years. I’ve had dreams about people i’ve never met before in my life, and then years later i’ve met and become friends with some of those people. Then realilizing that i had dreamed about them years before. Funny how the mind works sometimes. Well done friend.
