Creative Dreaming
Dreams play a large role in creativeness and throughout history not only have literary figures been inspired by dreams but painters, musicians, scientists, architects and even inventors have become inspired by thier dreams to go on and do something great from this inspiration.
The 18th century Italian composer Giuseppe Tartini once dreamt he sold his soul to the devil who then played a violin piece more exquisite then anything ever heard before. The following morning Tartini composed his greatest work, ‘The Devils Trill’ sonata, saying it was only a pale reflection of the music he had heard in his dream. Albert Einstein said he received many signs and clear images from his dreams in formulating his scientific theories.
In 1797 English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge suffered from an illness and sedated himself with opium before dozing off into a vivid dream. He awoke a few hours later with 300 lines of beautiful poetry within his mind from this dream and began to quickly write them. After writing 54 lines he was then interrupted by a visitor. When the visitor finally left and hour later, the poet returned to his work prepared to write the rest, however;the remaining lines and verses had faded from his mind. What he did manage to record however; was the masterpiece ‘Kubla Khan’.

After awaking from a horrific nightmare one stormy night Mary Shelly wrote Frankenstein.

Albert Einstein said he received many signs and clear images from his dreams helping him in formulating his scientific theories.

Robert Louis Stevenson first imagined Dr. Jekell and Mr Hyde through a dream.

Elias Howe had been struggling to design a sewing machine when one night he dreamt of savage warriors whose spears had eye shaped holes. This was very clue that inspired him to create the model of the eye pointed needle.

There are many more instances such as the above, however; the point is it is very evident dreams do play a significant creative role in our society, so much in fact it makes me wonder how many people are actually aware of this.
Perhaps creative dreams come from a higher source or power such as angels, maybe even demons, who really knows for sure, they may even come from the spirits of the dead although it is also possible that dreams emerge from our own subconscious memories and knowledge, normally hidden in the waking mind but whatever it is,it is quite apparent that creative dreaming can be of high value and importance!

Fascinating and thought provoking article. My dreams have never led to anything worthwhile. Here’s hoping your manuscript sees the light of day. Can’t wait to read the book and see what those dreams were all about.

This was a very good topic that is not usually not touched upon. My dreams are often strange. I dream about writing a song worth thousands but once I wake up, I cannot remember lol. I wonder… Great read Tan

Tanya, this is a very in-depth and thought-provoking piece. I have often had dreams that stay with me long after I’ve awoken. I always write my dreams down if they’re compelling enough in some way. In some cases my dreams have lead to short stories. Great write!

I love your dream article. Very good examples of well known writers that have been there and done that. Including creativity
from your own dreams. I don’t remember being blessed so richly.

Jie Zhang’s Continual Activation Theory of Dreaming says that when we dream, we transfer memories from short-term to long-term memory. Consolidating long-term memories can help with the creative process.

I believe our dreams do play an interesting part in our lives, sometimes my dreams are so vivid that I can’t tell I’m dreaming and the colors are vivid.

Ooooo I loved this! I believe in our dreams come our real inner selves! undressed and laid bare. Loved the the bits about some of the most famous creations coming from dreams…maybe we should all take note and remember our dreams, funnily enough I am waiting for a write to be published about some of my crazy dreams this week, after being on a very high dose of steroids the dreams were very weird.

My you are no dreamer
All my poems are
A consequence of dreams
It’s only that I can’t get up
For fear of waking others
Yet in the morning I write poetry
As it comes to me
So I have composed over
1700 poems or so
I now suppose
Dreams are the inspiration
Of the days’ happenings
Whatever one writes
Comes from within
Some like it, some may not,
But all don’t believe in even God,
So who am I?
If my work is appreciated
I shall dream more
If you don’t credit me,
I shall still continue
To dream for sure,
Whether you like it or not
I will compose
Poems all the more

Most times I can’t remember my dreams. I’ve had a few like you describe, but not often. One stuck with me so much that I’ve written a book based off of it.
Nice piece.
Thanks,

Facinating article mystify. Some of my dreams have come true over the years. I’ve had dreams about people i’ve never met before in my life, and then years later i’ve met and become friends with some of those people. Then realilizing that i had dreamed about them years before. Funny how the mind works sometimes. Well done friend.
