Emotional Intellegence: A Useful Concept

Emotional intelligence is a way to understand the behaviour of poeple and manage your actions accordingly in order to avoid any harsh situation. It is beneficial in our professional as well as in personal life. Either you have problems with your office colleagues or with your family members and friends.  It provides you better solution to deal with difficult situations.

The most popular theory on EI has been given by Daniel Goleman in his must read books ”Emotional Intelligence, why it matters more than IQ”, “Working with Emotional Intelligence” and “Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships”. In his theory he explains that to be successful it is important to understand people behaviour. IQ and talent are not sufficient to acheive your goals. 

These are the main points of Golemans Model:

Self Awareness- which is the ability to understand your own emotions and how they impact following your own feelings and decisions.

Self Management- The ability to control your own emotions and adapt to different circumstances.

Social Awareness- which is the ability to understand, react and sense other people emotion and comprehend different social networks.

Relationship Management- is the ability to inspire and influence or develop other people and manage conflicts.

An Example:

Suppose when you have disageement with your colleague on some issue. Instead of making an opinion that he is wrong. Try to understand the scenario from his point of view. This will allow you to see the situation in a broad way. Now compare your point of view with his one and then make the discussion with him. Now you are considering his emotions while conversating. This will give him sense of respect and there are more chances of matter to be resolved.
