Physical Development of a Typical Five Year Old
At this age children should be able to walk forwards and backwards with no problem. They should be able to balance themsevles when walking on a balance beam. This is a type gross motor skill. Other gross motor skills are running, jumping, or playing any type of sport. Really anything to do with the child moving its body are gross motor skills.
Fine motor skills on the other hand are coloring, cutting with scissors, or writing their name. When it come to five year olds they are some what skilled. A five year old may have a hard time staying in the lines of a picture when coloring. Five year olds begin to show a big improvement in controlling their writing tool. As they begin to cut things out with scissors, their task can become a little more difficult. Some five year olds have a hard time cutting on a line. Other children cut over the line. As objects decrease in size it bcomes more difficult for them to cut out. But, by this age they can cut small objects. They can button and unbutton coats or jackets. Another thing they can do is put on their own shoes on the correct foot. Some five year olds can even tie their shoes too.
Intellectual Development of a Typical Five Year Old
A typical five year old begins to strengthen their language skills. The alphabet is well know to them. By this age they understand and recognize letters and the sounds they make. Now that the language skills are showing improvement adults are able to understand them better. They begin to speak more clearly and can pronounce words correctly. The child’s mind is growing and is increasing their vocabulary list. Now they have a larger vocabulary, so more complex sentences are made. Modifiers and adjectives are added to the sentences of a five year old. By the end, a five year old has a vocabulary list of about two thousand words.
To farther help their minds grow five year olds play. Playing is very improtant to a child. Through play they add their own thoughts and ideas. At the age of five they also like to imitate an adult. Imagination is also common within five year olds. They use their imagination by using different symbols to represent things.
Emotional Development of a Typical Five Year Old
Five year olds have many different feels and show their affection in many different ways. At this age they can become angry one moment then happy the next. They show anger by yelling or by using their words. Some times even hit others. They can change moods at the drop of a hat.
