Five Years

Describes five year olds’ developmentally.

They show affection by hugging. Love is  often shown by wanting to help or asking someone if they need help. Five year olds are very thoughful. By now they have developed a sense of humor. Laughter symbolizes a show of happiness. Lots of times when they are sad five year olds deals with that emotion throught play. A lot of time you can see them acting out their problems and some times they try to solve their problems. Other times some like to talk it out with an adult. Other emotions they have that are more commom are sympathy and being serious. When they show sympathy they act very kind to one another. They may offer a toy to another child that’s upset, or play with them. Five year olds can be very serious. Some times they do funny things, but to them its not funny. They don’t like to be laughed at like a joke. But, they do love to laugh. The children want you to laugh with them not at them.

Social Development of a Typical Five Year Old

To a five year old, friendship is extremely improtant. It is valued by them. At this age they begin to pick a best friend. When it come to five year olds girls usually play with girls and boys usually play with boys. Along with making friends and developing friendships they learn. Five year olds learn their social skills. They begin to say words like “thank you” and “you’re welcome”. Five year olds learn to share and compromise as a result of friendship, like if there are two friends playing one child is more likely to offer their toy to the other, and they could take turns playing wih it.

At first they play alone and not with other children, not even adults are wanted to participate. Then they become friendly and interact with other children of their age.

Now that friendships are formed, five year olds play in groups. Around five or six children would be found in one group. They are more talkative and outgoing at this age because of the friendships they have formed. They also develop great understanding for things. Five year olds have greater respect for others and for themselves.
