Guilt and How to Manage It

Guilt is the feeling that you have done something wrong or are responsible for something bad happening.

Guilt is the feeling that you have done something wrong or are responsible for something bad happening. You may feel guilty after you have had an argument with someone you love. Or you may feel guilty if you have done something unintentionally, that caused something bad to happen.

If you feel guilty about something you’ve done, think about the source of your guilt. Have you done something wrong or are you responding to how others see the situation? For example, if you have stood up to others during a conflict, have you allowed a parent or guardian to make you feel guilty for being assertive?

Try not to be critical of yourself. If you’ve made a mistake, correct it and then move on. If you find guilt over an issue or problem to be overwhelming, seek professional help so you can work through the problem.
