Harry Potter and The Half-blood Prince: A Brief Recollection on Its Ending and Finer Details (Contains Spoilers)

In this article, Daniel Tinmek ponders over the ending of the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and how the shocking death could have had more emotional impact.

I started reading Harry Potter at the age of twelve. When the seventh book came out, I was quick to devour it, and as such, I’ve been more than eager to watch the movie adaptations that have been spawned because of it. However, after watching The Order of the Phoenix and now The Half-Blood Prince, I have to wonder if it’s just the purist in me that isn’t able to feel much of an emotional impact from the deaths, or if they’re just not well-done.

For example–in The Half-Blood Prince, there is an extremely-dramatic leadup to Dumbledore’s death, as there was for Sirius’ in The Order of the Phoenix. However, when Severus Snape did finally strike Dumbledore down with the infamous killing curse, I expected something more–a pang of emotion, a trip of the conscious, a pause of my heart. However, when none of these happened, I became extremely disappointed, especially since the following scenes did nothing to remedy my worries about the movie.

A few details I’ve thought over since I’ve finished watching the movie.

1: Why did they choose to leave out the funeral scene, quite possibly the most powerful moment of Dumbledore’s storyline? Was it because of budget issues, that it would seem overdone, corny even?

2: I recall Harry being extremely emotional after Dumbledore’s death in the novel. Having basically been Harry’s father for the past six years of his life, you would have thought that there would be a more dramatic and emotional response from Daniel Radcliffe’s character. This concerns me and has since Order of the Phoenix. If the director can’t pack enough emotional impact into the death scenes, how is he going to pull off the deaths in the seventh and eighth movies?

Though I’m not sure how this will play out, I’m sadened at how the movies have, for the most part, begun to lack in the emotion department. However, and I will repeat, I may have this viewpoint because I’m a purist.
