How to Find (And Land) The Career of Your Dreams

A guide to getting the job you want.

Have you ever looked at someone and thought that they had a dream job? Have you imagined yourself employed in a position that gave you everything you ever wanted? It is possible for you to find the career of your dreams. But how can you find that career if you are not even sure exactly what your dream job is?

What Do You Love?
First you should ask yourself what it is that you love to do. Maybe you are a great artist. Perhaps you enjoy spending time helping others or working with children. Does graphic designer, occupational therapist or child care worker sound like a job that fits you? Maybe you enjoy art or collecting coins. Perhaps working in a museum would be the job of your dreams.

What Can You Do Well?
Sometimes the things that you love and the things that you are good at aren’t necessarily the same thing. Think about it; don’t you have a friend who loves to sing even though everyone wishes she wouldn’t? Don’t let that be you! Think about ways you can turn your hobbies or passions into a job. Someone who loves to bake could open a bakery or teach baking classes to children. Someone who is a good writer may want to finally get started on their novel or find a job writing for a local newspaper. The career possibilities are endless.

Take A Class
Many people have talents that have not yet fully matured or have not been explored. Sometimes, it is a college class that sparks an interest in a field of study that they had never considered before. Training in any field is also going to look better on any resume you hand out in the future.

Find Out Who Is Hiring
The internet and the local newspaper are great places to check out the job market in your area. In addition to those resources, you should go to a career fair. Most junior colleges hold career fairs during the school year to encourage local employers to meet with current students to talk about working with them when school is finished.

Try A Career Assessment
Many places offer tests that you can take to point you in the direction of a career you will love. Many colleges and employment services offer these tests free of charge. There are some that may help you decide online as well.

Give It Your Heart
Once you have decided what it is that you want to do with your life, you have to go for it with your whole heart. Obtain the education required to become employed in that field. Get to know others who work in or around the field. Be confident that you have chosen well and walk into the interview with a smile and firm handshake.

Some of the fastest growing jobs are within your reach. If you can use these guidelines, you will be able to help yourself get the job you have always wanted, or even the job you never knew you always wanted!
