Improve Your Memory – Exercise Your Brain

Research has collected a large body of evidence that some healthy, older people remain more mentally alert than others do. Part of this body of evidence has identified a definite link to maintaining a mentally active lifestyle and staying sharp.

Physical exercise has been shown to strengthen the brain cells you already have. Keep your memory functioning by visits to the gym or daily walks. Start slowly and gently work up to some real exercise. Remember: exercise your body and your brain will benefit.

Love computer games? Instead of playing the simple shoot-em-ups, get some that require some skill and planning ahead, like logic puzzles. Quite a few computer games also require solving puzzles or following clues to find a treasure. You can work different logic puzzles every day on your computer. Just make sure that you use different puzzles and do not work the same one over and over. You need new mental experiences to make a difference.

If you like board games, find a chess or checkers club and visit often. Senior citizen centers and other organizations working with seniors might have a list of resources for both companionship and mental stimulation. Some city parks have groups of chess or checkers games going on every sunny day. Join them.

Social experiences, interacting with people, even hosting a weekly card party with your neighbors or friends will stimulate new brain cells and protect your memory.

One handy way to make good use of those moments on a day spent waiting for something, a bus or in a doctor’s office, for example, is to carry a puzzle magazine with you and a pencil or a pen. Get a magazine that has an assortment of different puzzles so you are always confronted with a new learning experience.

Now that you know how to exercise your brain, take advantage of that knowledge right now, today. Your age doesn’t matter. Do it now. Don’t wait until you are older. You can improve your memory before you even realize you need the improvement.

One activity you might enjoy is to pack a lunch, get your puzzle book and walk to the park. Sit on a bench, share your lunch with the birds or ducks and work some puzzles. Try it.
