Interpretations of 10 Common Dreams

by booradley in Psychology, December 4, 2007

A collection of interpretations of dreams that are common to many people.

There is a great deal of research in the field of dreams. There are theories about why we have dreams and what those dreams may symbolize in our lives. People experience an infinite number of dreams in their lifetime. There are, however, many dreams that are common to a large number of people. The following article is a collection of interpretations of dreams that are common to many people.

Falling

If you have dreams about falling, you may be feeling insecure or anxious about something in your life. This can include anything from declining performance at work or school to a failing relationship. Your lack of control over these issues is symbolized in the act of falling.

Nudity

If you dream about being naked in public, and ashamed or embarrassed of your nudity, you could be hiding something from people in your life but feel that these people can see right through your act or whatever it is you’re hiding. You may be going through life feeling like whatever it is you’re hiding or keeping from people, you are doing a poor job of it. The absence of your clothes symbolizes the absence of a good “front” you are trying to put up. On the contrary, for those of you who are not embarrassed or ashamed of your nudity, it is a symbol that you are proud, carefree, and honest.

Losing Teeth

Many people often dream about their teeth falling out. A great deal of research has been done in this dream field. Some say the falling out or crumbling of teeth could mean that you are feeling unattractive or self-conscious about your appearance. A second theory says that you may be feeling worried or anxious about something, perhaps an exam or presentation, and the falling out of your teeth symbolizes an over-exaggeration about your anxiety. Another theory suggests that because teeth are used to chew, bite, and gnaw, they can be regarded as a representation of power. Therefore, the falling out of your teeth could symbolize that you are feeling powerless and ignored in your life, due to reasons such as lack of assertiveness.

Kidnapping

If you dream you are being kidnapped, you may not have control over your life. Somebody or something in your life may have control of you.

Going Blind

Dreaming about going blind signifies that you are not seeing the truth for what it is. Whether you are ignorant or closed-minded, you may not be willing to recognize a problem that may exist in your life.

Being Chased

If you dream about being chased, it could simply be a sign of awareness that you live in a potentially dangerous environment and that you are vulnerable to attacks of violence and abuse.
You may also be running from problems or stressors in your life, rather than learning to deal or cope with such issues.

Flying

If you dream about flying with great ease and relaxation, it could symbolize your sense of control and power over your life. You may feel that you have risen above life challenges.
If you are having difficulty maintaining flight in your dream, you may be having difficulty maintaining power over your life or over a situation due to obstacles standing in your way.

Dying

If you dream that you are dying, it may mean that you are in a state of hurt and feel like your life is falling apart. If it is a loved one who is dying, it could signify that your feelings for that person may be dying, or have died, or that your relationship with that person is changing.

Money

Money often denotes success, power, self-worth, and confidence. If you dream about winning money, it may signify that you are successful and prosperous, or that such traits are within reach. If you dream about losing money, you may be lacking power, success, self-worth, control, ambition, and self-esteem. If you dream that you have no money, you may feel or have a fear of losing your place in the world and/or not achieving an important goal you have set out for yourself.

Adultery

If you dream about committing adultery it may be a sign that you are having sexual urges. It could also mean that you are involved in something taboo, perhaps illegal. If you dream your partner is committing adultery, it could mean that you are afraid of being neglected, or you feel you are lacking attention in the relationship.

Homosexuality

If you are not homosexual in your waking life but you are dreaming of being a homosexual, it may signify feelings of self-love, self-acceptance, and compassion. If you are uncomfortable in the dream about being homosexual, it may represent insecurities and self-consciousness about your masculinity or femininity.

I thought this was interesting – especially the section about one’s teeth falling out. I generally have a dream about my teeth falling out right before a big life change occurs. Thankfully, in my case, the changes have always been good.

I’ve only met one other person who’s had dreams about her teeth falling out – I hadn’t realized it was considered a common dream.
