Mate Selection

            The term mate selection leads to the meaning known as “sexual selection” which is defined as “The forces determined by mate preference acting to cause one genotype to mate more frequently than another genotype.” Human mate selection is basically the characteristics and principles of human organs utilization in selecting a mating partner, and in order to increase the possibility of their reproductive success (Buss et al., 2001)   

           While talking about the mate selection in the past historical time, the criteria of mate selection was quite different as compare to the recent time. But it has some similarities which are consider as the basic characteristics of mate selection by both men and women. In past historical time the criteria was little bit different because of the environment and the social conditions of that time. It has been reported that in past women choose men having power, dignity, and dominancy in society. The criteria of mate selection among women in history were also based upon the physical characteristics of men. But in more general the basic criteria at that time was based on the dominancy factor of men. Men having dominant personality were preferred by the women in past historical time.   

           While in the modern era the criteria’s are little bit changed however the basic principle and characteristics for choosing mate are quite similar. In present day women usually prefer men having extra ordinary personality, education, and earn money power as well. There are other characteristics of mate selection which includes physical appearance of the men like, broad shoulder which is the symbol of healthiness, muscular bodies, dominancy factor, small chin, etc. the criteria of modern period is quite change as the social values and environment of the present time are quite different as compare to the pre-historic time but the major principles are same because they are in nature of human being by default.  

It has been noted and it’s a common observation among public and in popular media that female usually prefer qualities like personality and supportiveness while choosing a mate. These are the characters which are more notable as compare to the physical attractiveness, when female choose their mates. Many people says and female also says that they like these character when they choose mate but they also say that if they have a option they will prefer those men who are physically strong.
