Psychological Colour Associations

We give different colours various associations. Find out what these common colour generally signify.

  • Red: considered as a strong and masculine colour with a sort of exciting and stimulating effect. It is classified as a warm colour, but more commonly associated with heat. Red is a very passionate colour.
  • Pink: a very feminine colour, even girly. It is thought of as soft and sensuous.
  • Orange: this colour is very intense and lively. It shares the same qualities with red, only the effect is less intense.
  • Peach: like pink, peach has a feminine feel to it, but is sunny and warm at the same time.
  • Yellow: very sunny and cheerful, a paler yellow can create a spacious effect in a room. Bolder yellows and seem acidic and a bit annoyed in large quantities, but can be extremely energizing in smaller doses. It has been proven that yellow can increase your hunger.
  • Green: relaxing and quiet, give you a feel of nature; a peaceful forest. The deeper the green the more sombre the feel of the green is.
  • Blue: too much blue can give off a sense of cool and melancholy, but in slightly smaller portions can have the effect of peace and tranquility.
  • Aquamarine: this is an interesting colour, and is perceived as rich and sometimes even complex. It can have many different feels to it depending on the lighting, and is very modern-looking when paired with brown.
  • Purple: deep purples are very powerful and rich colours, and often seem mysterious yet calm to us. Lighter purples like lavender are more feminine and quiet.
  • White: too much of this can give off a sterile feel, used in hospitals so as not to influence already high emotional thoughts. Less white has an association with light and cleanliness.
  • Black: A balance of power and elegance, black has a strong psychological effect. In excessive amounts blacks gives off a very dark and Gothic feel.
  • Grey: extremely conservative, generally a very boring feel is attached to this colour.
  • Brown: like green has an association to nature, in particular earth.

    Interestingly, we also associate the color “red” with “stop,” or “be cautious.” Hence why stop signs, red lights, etc. are red.

    Green is the opposite. This is why exit signs should be green instead of red; if you’re running toward the exit in an emergency, the color red can give you a subconscious “stop sign.”

    Oh, and though I can’t find the specific study at the moment, it’s been demonstrated that the color of a pen used in voting booths can influence the outcome of an election.
