Warning signs of impending suicide and methods of prevention.

With the recession abound. Many individuals are experiencing problems like loosing their jobs, bills not being  paid, homes lost to foreclosure and some even loosing loved ones. Really with these problems and heartaches some people can not hack it thus some decide to end it all…just get it over with.

Here are just some Warning Signs of Suicide:

     – Withdrawal and Social Isolation

     – Giving away Prized possessions

     – Signs and symptoms of Depression :  sadness, crying, fatigue, helplessnes, weight loss and loss of interest in sex

     - Saying their farewell or goodbyes to family and friends

     – Covert suicide messages and death wishes

     – Obvious suicide messages such as ” I’d be better off dead”

Come to think of it Suicide is a cop out. An escape of those who are cowards. Those who are to weak to face the music. Though there are possible ways to intervene with thoughts of Suicide:

     – Keeping communication lines open with friends and family

     – Continuity of care and consistency of primary nurses or caregiver

     – Check for dangerous conditions such as: exposed pipes, windows without safety glass and access to the roof or open balconies

     – Remove belts, sharp objects (knives, razors, nail files and clippers), suspenders, light cords, rope, neckties and glass from patients room

     – Make sure thatan actely suicidal patient is observed around the clock given a room prefereble next to the Nurse’s Station.

     – Always be alert when the patient uses sharp objects, takes medication or uses the bathroom ( to prevent from hanging or other injury to self)

Life is too precious to loose. Do try to enjoy it to the fullest. When down in the dumps it helps to pray … to hope. Not all is lost since as they say “When God closes the door he still leaves a window open”.
