What is self esteem?

Self esteem reflects a persons overall evaluation or appraisal of his or her own worth. It encompasses beliefs and emotions. Behavior may relect self-esteem. Applying to a particular dimension or global extent. Self-esteem is the third most occuring theme in psychological litrature.

It is believed that self-estem is a basic human need, an automatic consequence of the sum of people’s choices in using thir consciousness.

We need to have self worth for our self-esteem to grow, by accepting challenges thatt result in our sucess.

Early theories say self esteem is a form of motivation. Respect for others was thought to be fragile and easily lost than inner self-esteem.

You either have high or low self-esteem. People with high self-esteem are usually happier than thoes with low self-esteem

According to Crocker and her colleagues there are 7 domains which people derive their self-worth.

“1. Virtue

2. God’s love

3. Support of family

4. Academic competence

5. Physical attractiveness

6. Gaining other’s approval

7. Out doing others in competition”.
