The Clearance Sale Syndrome
People just jump at it when they see an advertisement of “Clearance sale”. One expects to buy everything cheap. Is it so really?
I was feeling so proud that I got so much for so little money until … until ….
My next door neighbour happened to drop in on a social call two days later and I
like a fool displayed all my shopping to him so that he could compliment me over my unique mission. “Very good, very good,” he kept singing at each item. “Ah, this is nice piece,” he said, “And exactly the same thing I bought last week. How much did you pay?”
After consulting the bill I told him, “Rs. 350.” “350?” the neighbour echoed back violently.. “350. Is it?”
“Why, isn’t it cheap?”
“Look here dear brother, I paid Rs. 300 for the same T shirt. And the same model, in fact it’s a replica of what I have…”
” But the price tag said, Rs. 400, crossed and reduced to Rs. 350.”
“And you fell for it?
“Yes, Rs. 50 knocked off, don’t you see?” It didn’t take me long to solve the riddle. The shop keeper had played a trick of numbers on me. Instead of selling at some kind of rock bottom price, the seller has made an excess profit of Rs. 50 through the clearance route.
“That’s the bonanza you get for patronizing these so called ‘clearance sale’ pal,” he elaborated to make me wiser on ‘clearance sales’.
“ Do you mean to say that I have paid more for everyone of these items.?”
“Absolutely.”
I don’t know how the clearance sale syndrome functions is in your country but in India, a shop keeper will fleece you by resorting to any kind of tactics. So, all my Indian friends be careful next time when you see an Ad in bold letters such as, CLERANCE SALE. You know what it means !
