The Psychology of Taking Psychology
A debate about the value of psychology.
Psychology seems to be – like philosophy – one of the pure disciplines. The student takes the topic because they are interest in it and not because they have an ulterior motive such as getting a job. Sure psychology can help if you want to go into teaching. But there are so many more useful topics such as math that one could take.
How about social work? From experience I would say one must have a few screws loose to want to go into social work. It is a very sastifying but the hours are bad and so is the pay.
Pure psychology? Actually, despite what the Canadian Psychology Association would say. one gets the skills to be an amateur psychology after a three or four degree. To become an official psychologyist, I have no comment.
All I can say is that duck is a very nice dish and there are a lot of quacks out there making funny theories about this and that.
But once in a while one might meet a psychologist who might be a nice person anyway and that makes the discipline worthwhile anyway.
Psychology is definitely the dark horse. But if I had to do it over again, I would probable major aagain in psychology.
