Thoughts on B. Nelson’s Quiz
Just a few thoughts on B’s personality test.
I thought B Nelson’s personality test was so neat. I enjoyed doing it and it made me think about my own quirky personality. I answered the questions just for the fun of it and right off the top of my head. Afterwards I realized my written answers weren’t exactly what I meant and one in particular was way off target. Nu.24. “Are you a good person, and if so, how do you know?” The answer I gave was, “ I think I’m a good person because I always do what I think is right. And that is true but it kept bugging me. I thought about some religions that are based on killing non believers and those people believe they are obeying God’s laws and therefore believe they are right. Some people with personality disorders murder and believe they are right. So I began to see that believing you are right is not the same as being right. Of course I have known that all along but B’s quiz brought it closer home.

When you stop and think about it, it’s a difficult question. What would we do and think it’s right? I know I would steal if my family were hungry and I could steal food for them. If someone pointed a gun at my child and I could kill that person first, I would. I don’t know what I would be capable of if it involved my family. I have always thought that I would never physically or mentally harm anyone intentionally and still if it meant harm to my family, I would. We are all born with the instinct to look after our children and keep them from harm. It’s the only way our society has survived thus far so it must be nature’s plan. Who knows when we get in a tight spot what we would do for our children’s survival or our own?

And we have people serving life sentences in prison or who get the electric chair for doing the same thing. It boggles the mind how many different directions this question can take us. Thanks B Nelson for opening our minds just a bit.

I believe that self preservation is a natural, God given instinct, as is protecting one’s loved ones. Murder and theft are not.
Each individual knows where to draw the line. It boils down to personal, moral choices. A “good” person might kill to protect his/her self or child, but not for any other reason.

Ruby, I had to go look. B Nelson had a great set of questions. You ask a very good one, too. I quit asking myself if I was “good” or not quite a while ago. Instead I ask, “Did I contribute?” “Did the person with I just interacted gain something positive from this exchange?” and “Can I live with myself tomorrow if I do this today?” And far too often, “Now how am I going to live this down?”
